Aloha and Mahalo

Paradise on Earth DOES exist!

August 14, 2014

Aloha from Hawaii! It's Jenny here, and I've just wrapped up another sun-soaked day in paradise. Traveling to Hawaii has always been a dream, and living it in real-time is nothing short of magical.

Upon arrival, the warmth of the locals was as inviting as the island sun. Their smiles are genuine, their stories captivating, and their Aloha spirit infectious. I've made friends in every corner, from the bustling markets of Honolulu to the serene sands of Lanai. The local's respect for the land and sea is evident in their daily life, a lesson in harmony I'll take with me.

Grocery shopping here, however, does come with a sticker shock for a mainlander like me. A gallon of milk could cost up to $8, and a loaf of bread hovers around $5. But, embracing the local diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish caught just offshore, makes the experience authentically flavorful and surprisingly affordable.

Surfing in Hawaii is a rite of passage. With a board rented from a local shop, I tackled the waves of Waikiki. Let's just say, the surf was forgiving to a beginner like me, and the rush of catching my first wave was as exhilarating as it was humbling.

But perhaps the most memorable encounter was snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Turtle Bay, where I met the true locals - the sea turtles. Gliding alongside these graceful creatures, I was reminded of the delicate beauty our oceans hold.

Hawaii, with its vibrant culture, breathtaking nature, and the serene rhythm of island life, has captured a piece of my wanderlust heart. Until next time, I'll be dreaming of the islands, where the turtles roam free, and the waves beckon the brave.

West Coast Wandering

Driving the Pacific Coast in a Week

July 8, 2014

Hello, fellow wanderers! It's Jenny, back with tales from my epic week-long journey down the storied West Coast of the United States. A paradise for road-trippers and adventure-seekers alike, this trip was one for the books.

Starting with the legendary California highway, I found myself winding down coastal roads with the Pacific Ocean as my co-pilot. The freedom of the open road and the dramatic cliffside views were a powerful introduction to the diverse splendor of the West Coast.

The journey led me to the mystical Cannon Beach in Oregon, where the imposing Haystack Rock stands guard over the shore. Here, the community's love for the great outdoors is as ingrained as the sandy beaches and towering pines that define this rugged coastline.

As I ventured into the vibrant cities, the culture of the people I met was a kaleidoscope of the American spirit—innovative, free-thinking, and resilient. Yet, in San Francisco, the harsh reality of homelessness cast a shadow over the city's iconic hills and bustling piers. The contrast between the city's immense wealth and visible poverty was a sobering sight amidst the grandeur of the Golden Gate.

Then came Hollywood, the land of dreams, where glitz and glamour live alongside the grind of showbiz. Los Angeles greeted me with its palm-lined streets and the buzzing energy of creative souls chasing their aspirations under the California sun.

Ending my journey in San Diego, I reveled in the laid-back surfing culture, where every wave tells a story. The surfing community here is tight-knit, welcoming, and always ready to share the thrill of the ride with a newbie like me.

From the serene to the bustling, the inspiring to the poignant, my week exploring the West Coast was a profound reminder of the many faces of America. I've left with a heart full of stories, a camera full of memories, and a soul eager to discover more.

Until next time, keep wandering, and remember, the best adventures are the ones that surprise you.
